SEO Resource Guide · Local Search Fundamentals

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of making your business visible when people search for what you do in a specific place — on Google Maps, in the local pack, and in location-modified organic results. For most UK trades, clinics and service-area firms, it is the difference between the phone ringing and silence.

Local SEO is not one tactic. It is a connected system: profile, pack visibility, on-site pages and directory consistency.
The Direct Answer

Local SEO earns visibility for geographic searches.

In one sentence: local SEO optimises your business so Google shows you when someone searches for your service in a location — whether they type dentist Leeds, say near me on their phone, or ask Google Maps for the closest MOT centre.

It is still search engine optimisation: you need a crawlable website, accurate content, structured data and acceptable page speed. What makes it local is the additional layer Google applies when it detects geographic intent. That layer pulls in your Google Business Profile, your distance from the searcher, your reviews, your directory listings and your location-specific landing pages — signals that matter far less, or not at all, for national or topic-only searches.

If you run a business that serves customers in a place — a patch, a city, a county — local SEO is usually where your enquiries come from. A plumber does not need to rank nationally for how to fix a burst pipe; they need to rank in Leeds when a pipe bursts at 11pm. A solicitor needs to appear when someone in their town searches for conveyancing solicitor, not when a student in Cornwall reads about inheritance law.

Who Local SEO Is For

If customers choose you based on where you operate, you need local SEO.

Business types where local SEO is the primary growth channel
Business typeWhy local SEO dominatesTypical search patternIndustry framework

Businesses with no geographic constraint — national e-commerce, SaaS, publishers — usually need regular SEO instead. We specialise in the rows above.

How Local Rankings Work

Google’s local algorithm weighs three factors you can actually influence.

Google publishes these openly for local and map results. Every local SEO tactic maps back to one of them.

Relevance  Does Google understand what you do?

Relevance means the match between the search query and your business profile: primary category on your Google Business Profile, services listed, website content, schema markup and the language in your reviews. If you are an electrician but your profile category says “general contractor” and your homepage never mentions electrical work, you lose relevance for electrician [town] before distance or reviews even matter.

Fixing relevance is structural: correct GBP categories, dedicated service pages for each job type (EV installs, diagnostics, implants), and JSON-LD schema that tells Google exactly which services you provide.

Distance  Are you actually near the searcher?

Distance is proximity: where the searcher is, where your business address or service area is, and whether Google believes you legitimately serve that location. For brick-and-mortar firms, this is straightforward. For mobile and home-based businesses, it depends entirely on correct Service-Area Business (SAB) configuration — defined postcodes, hidden home address, accurate service zones.

The SAB trap: a removals firm covering three counties with no defined service areas ranks nowhere in any of them. A locksmith who exposes a home address looks less credible than a competitor with proper SAB settings. Distance is not just geography — it is configuration.

Prominence  Does Google trust you more than the next result?

Prominence is reputation and authority in the local context: review count and recency, citation consistency across directories, backlinks from local and trade sources, and overall brand signals. A estate agent with 120 recent Google reviews and identical NAP data across 25 UK directories has prominence a competitor with a prettier website and twelve outdated reviews cannot match.

Prominence is also where fake listings and lead farms cause damage — they manufacture prominence signals until Google purges them. Genuine businesses win long-term by building prominence that survives algorithm updates.

The Six Pillars

What local SEO actually involves in practice.

These are the systems our SEO Foundation Package builds in 90 days. Skip any one and the rest underperform.

  • Google Business Profile architecture: verified listing, accurate primary and secondary categories, service areas under SAB rules where needed, attributes (emergency, appointments, accessibility), photos and a review acquisition rhythm tied to when customers are happiest.
  • Citation consistency: identical business name, phone and address treatment across 20–30 premium UK directories and trade registers — Checkatrade, Yell, Thomson Local, Law Society, RCVS-aligned listings — so Google can cross-verify you are real.
  • Service-page silos: dedicated landing pages on your website for each major job type, mapped to how people search. One page cannot rank for ceramic coating, mobile valet and paint correction simultaneously — each needs its own URL and content.
  • LocalBusiness / Service schema: validated JSON-LD connecting your website to your GBP entity, declaring services, credentials and service areas in machine-readable form.
  • Technical foundation: crawl repair, mobile conversion paths with click-to-call above the fold, canonical systems and Core Web Vitals work on enquiry pages — the shared layer without which local pages cannot rank.
  • Measurement and roadmap: baseline rankings for your priority queries, conversion tracking on calls and forms, and a 12-month content plan for the research-intent searches that seed future enquiries.
Local Search Intent

The query patterns local SEO is built to capture.

Four local intent classes and what each demands from your build
Intent classExample queriesSERP behaviourWhat wins

Each of our industry frameworks maps these intent classes to the specific queries and landing pages for that trade.

Common Mistakes

Why most UK local businesses stay invisible on Google.

An unclaimed or neglected Google Business Profile

The single most common failure: no verified profile, wrong category, no service areas, stock photos, reviews never requested. Competitors with half your skill but a maintained profile take the map pack by default. For emergency trades this alone can cost thousands a month.

Inconsistent name, address and phone data

Your website says 07871…, Yell says 07872…, and Checkatrade lists an old landline. Google treats inconsistent NAP as a trust failure. Local rankings suppress until every directory matches — a mechanical fix most agencies never complete.

One homepage instead of service silos

A builder listing every service in one paragraph cannot rank for loft conversion [town], extension cost and renovation contractor at once. Each query family needs its own page. Without silos, you concede every specific search to whoever built them.

Paying for blog posts instead of local architecture

Monthly retainers that produce generic articles are regular SEO tactics. They do not fix your GBP, deploy citations or build service pages. Trades buying “SEO” this way often have twenty blog posts and zero map pack presence. Local SEO is build work, not content volume.

What a Local SEO Build Looks Like

Follow-Up Questions

Common questions about local SEO.

Is local SEO the same as Google Business Profile optimisation?

No. GBP optimisation is one pillar of local SEO, usually the highest-leverage one. But local SEO also requires citation consistency, service-page architecture on your website, schema markup and technical foundations. A perfect profile on a broken, one-page website still underperforms.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Technical fixes are typically re-crawled within 2–6 weeks. Map pack movement often appears within 4–8 weeks of profile and citation work. Broader local organic growth compounds over 3–9 months. Timelines vary by competition and starting position; we guarantee delivery of the build, not specific rankings.

Do I need a website for local SEO?

Technically Google can show a GBP-only listing, but you will lose most local organic rankings and conversion control without a website. Service silos, schema and conversion paths live on your site. A GBP pointing at a one-page Wix template is local SEO half-done.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Parts of it, yes: requesting reviews, keeping GBP hours accurate, answering queries. The structural work — SAB configuration, citation deployment across 20–30 directories, schema validation, crawl repair and keyword-mapped service pages — is skilled and time-intensive. Our handover pack and roadmap are written so you can maintain and extend the work yourself after the build.

What is the local pack?

The local pack (map pack) is the block of three business listings with a map that appears for searches with local intent. It sits above most organic results and includes call, direction and website buttons. Ranking in the pack is governed by relevance, distance and prominence — not identical to blue-link ranking.

How much does local SEO cost?

Agencies often charge £500–£2,000+ per month indefinitely. We treat local SEO as finite foundation work: the SEO Foundation Package is £2,499 flat for the full 90-day build, with every asset registered in your name and no ongoing retainer.
